Introducing Our Collaboration with Edward Bulmer Natural Paint: A Celebration of Conscious Craft and Colour
At Lorfords Contemporary, we’ve always believed that the most beautiful interiors begin with integrity - natural materials, traditional craftsmanship, and a deep respect for sustainability. This summer, we’re proud to introduce a collaboration that brings these values to life in a new and vibrant way: our exclusive partnership with Edward Bulmer Natural Paint.
Together, we’ve created something truly special - a reimagining of our traditionally made designs through the lens of conscious colour. It’s a meeting of shared philosophies and a celebration of what happens when natural materials meet natural pigments.
A New Chapter in Sustainable Design
The centrepiece of our collaboration is the debut of ‘The Brighton Bench’ - an elegant new design inspired by an original 18th-century piece that was selected by Edward from our Lorfords Antiques collection. We’ve taken this historic silhouette and brought it into the present, using entirely natural materials and traditional methods.
From its FSC-certified solid beech frame to the hand-stitched horsehair upholstery and solid bamboo turned legs, every element of this bench is rooted in our commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability. It’s made by hand in our Cotswolds workshop, using age-old techniques to create a piece that will last for generations.
What’s new - and what makes this launch particularly exciting - is the addition of Edward Bulmer Natural Paint finishes on all wooden detailing. With over 100 earth-derived colours to choose from, these paints are entirely free from harmful chemicals, VOCs or microplastics, and are mixed to order using natural mineral pigments and plant-based binders.
Painting with Purpose
We’ve long admired Edward’s approach to colour and his commitment to sustainability. His paints have a unique depth, richness and history - and now, they’re available across our entire range, from ottoman frames and benches to the legs of chairs and sofas.
This collaboration allows our clients to explore new levels of customisation. Whether you choose a soft heritage tone or a bold contemporary shade, every colour is carefully curated and designed to work harmoniously with our pieces. We’ve created a limited-edition collection of colour pairings to inspire - showcasing how even our most classic designs can be transformed into something entirely new.
We’re proud to champion slow design: made-to-order furniture that celebrates traditional British craftsmanship and makes no compromises when it comes to sustainability.
Working with Edward and his team has been a joy and a journey of shared values. As he so eloquently put it:
“Painting furniture is an old tradition - but to do so with paints made only from natural materials makes it relevant again. It’s a natural fit.”
We couldn’t agree more.
